School Connectedness through House Teams

Wiltse Elementary Staff has been working on a Social Emotional Learning inquiry focus from 2012 when staff noticed that more students are having difficulty socially and emotionally.

Our mission statements states: “Wiltse School is committed to providing a safe, caring environment to develop life-long learners with a positive self-concept.”

Our core values are:

• To respect ourselves, others and property.

• To develop caring & co-operative relationships among staff, parents & children.

• To appreciate the value of learning

• To develop a positive and realistic self-concept.

• To encourage students to be motivated lifelong learners.

During the School Improvement Day (September, 2015) we used the Spirals of Inquiry Approach to identify what was going on for our kids this year. We noticed that more and more children are displaying anxieties which negatively affect their abilities to function and learn at school. Some students are reporting that they have no friends, and some are displaying unexpected social behaviours even though most students could tell us the expected behaviours. We wondered if we could do a better job teaching our kids how to be more inclusive and how to solve problems peacefully.

After some discussion and brainstorming we came up with several strategies to begin to address our concerns. One of the ideas was to implement multi-age house teams in order to build a stronger, more supportive school community. By building smaller, supportive communities within a larger one, we believe that we can create personal connections and a sense of belonging for all students.
